charlie,

true, very true. closing gitmo is a start, so let's see what else barack does. the jury will be out for the first two years.

i guess my negativity is a result of the post bush "jesus i can't believe he got away with overseeing these unlawful actions" haze. but i know it's not just GW. gitmo has been around.

yeh read goodman's interview with regards to rendition and the two jokers he scared up to be on his team. scared is the best word for it.

i don't know what a troll is, exactly, (those cute fuzzy little creatures?), but i'll try not to be one! much too tall for that

thanks for putting a post together on that bit...

@ Tim: I have to admit my ignorance about Obama's intelligence team, thanks for the link. I agree, it is upsetting to see Obama sticking with Tenet-era, pro-rendition members of the CIA. I think I'll write a post about this.

I disagree with your trivialization of the closing of Gitmo. Symbolically, it is an extremely important move. And I think that counts for a lot. That can't be the only change to intelligence gathering activities, but it's a strong start.

Also, no need to bash NYU students. Don't be a troll.

Sure, close Git-Mo, but that is only about .25 percent of the global problem. What about the other torture camps in eastern europe where we ship "terrorizers" off to without trials or calls home?

With 151,000 U.S. troops in Iraq, and 32,000 in Afghanistan, including 14,500 with the NATO-led coalition, and 17,500 who are fighting insurgents and training Afghan forces...I think it is safe to say the US military will be torturing folks in the middle east, and continuing to kill civilians in foreign counrties -- aka collateral damage -- for years to come.

Unless citizens stand up and stop it.

Because we all know Nancy Pelosi and the Democrats are part of this war machine which we have allowed to run wild.

Is there an anti-war group at NYU? Anyone???? Or are we all into the Hills and Gossip Girl and fashion and just skimming the surface of the root problems of our supposed democracy.

Look at who Obama has appointed to head his Intelligence Transition Team:
(Democracy Now is a legitimate, serious media organization). If you don't know who Amy Goodman is, don't call yourself a journalist:

Bush also has repeatedly made statements almost exactly like that. I would like to hear him answer what the US will consider to be torture, and be forward about revealing what interrogation methods are used during his presidency.

Until all the "we can't let the terrorists know how we 'interrogate' them" bullshit is over, it doesn't matter what Obama *says*.

I think he just wants to close the detention facilities. So the naval base would remain.

Is he closing all of Guantanamo Bay? Or just the prisons used to house "terrorists"?
