Going by the first third of the above video, Fake John Woo got it backwards: Al Qaeda officials actually think a McCain presidency is better for them than an Obama one. Shocking! Well, not so much.
You may remember that back in 2004, Bin Laden released a tape on the eve of the presidential election. What you might not know is that, as Ron Suskind reported in his book The One Percent Doctrine, CIA officials concluded that the tape was actually timed to help President Bush win reelection.
And when you consider how desperately ineffective the administration has been in battling Al Qaeda, and how good they’ve been at alienating allies and kneecapping our military and intelligence resources by dumping them into bloody quagmires, that makes perfect sense. The Bush administration has been the ideal foe: irrational, erratic, and myopic.
Some months ago, I might have argued that McCain would represent a continuation of that approach to foreign policy. But if this campaign has taught us one thing, it’s that the truth is actually a whole lot worse than that. Just look at who’s delivering McCain’s official response to the leaked Al Qaeda remarks: certified lunatics (and high-level campaign FoPo advisers) Jim Woolsey and Randy Scheunemann. If these people are the class of intellects that McCain is going to rely on for advice, then it’s probable that a McCain presidency would make us wax nostalgic about the sober, clear-headed leadership of the Bush administration.
