We weren’t around to cover it, but over Thanksgiving break, the Indian metropolis of Mumbai was rocked by a series of terrorist attacks. It’s all over now, after a series of strikes that left almost 200 civilians dead. Al Jazeera is reporting that India’s government had been warned of an impending terrorist attack, but did little to prepare; a sluggish response to the initial attacks didn’t do anything to improve the situation. India’s top security official has resigned in disgrace.
No word on what group is responsible for the attack right now, but I think MJ Rosenberg is right to advise caution when it comes to the accusations we’re going to be hearing soon. It’s likely that a lot of those accusations are going to be motivated more by politics than new facts coming to light. Unsurprisingly, although there is still no evidence of Pakistan’s involvement in the attacks, this hasn’t done any favors for Pakistan-India relations.
On a side note, the way these attacks were covered online was pretty fascinating. While the attacks were still ongoing, the Mumbai tweetstream may have actually been the best way to get minute-by-minute updates.
