On Saturday, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis played SNL. Thankfully, they were not responsible for the best music that aired during the show. Oddly enough, it was a commercial that was responsible for their upstaging, namely one for Daft Punk’s upcoming album. Though only lasting 15 seconds, the TV spot was the best preview of the album we’ve gotten so far (as it was the first to contain actual music). Here is some wildly rampant speculation about Daft Punk’s new album, all extrapolated from Saturday’s ad.
A Chiller Sound
When compared with the sub-rattling thump of “Around the World” or “Da Funk,” the new snippet sounds much more laid-back and glitzy — like a dirty martini to DP’s usual Jaeger-bomb of sound. The new drum sound almost seems organic, with the hi-hats providing a funky shuffle and the bass drum substantially less invasive than usual. In fact, this “real instruments” approach (who knows if they’re actually real) makes the song sound more like fellow Frenchmen Phoenix, with whom DP have been known to occasionally fraternize. Of course, the Daft duo themselves have taken it down a few notches every now and then, but while tracks like “Something About Us” and “Nightvision” sounded ripe for robot sex, this new DP cut sounds more like the babymaking music of yesteryear, which we can assume was made for real humans.
A More Retro Sound
Fueled perhaps by ex-Chic guitarist Nile Rodgers, who allegedly guests on a few of the new songs, the snippet is more “Best of My Love” than “Digital Love.” DP have never been shy about their love for disco, but few times have they backed up that love with a fully retro sound. For the new album, it seems like the duo are committed to recreating disco as it was in its heyday, as they brought on Rodgers and Italian disco legend Giorgio Moroder to consult.
As one overachieving blogger once illustrated, Daft Punk are fond of changing the design of their signature helmets. As seen above, the new designs are classily contrasted silver and gold brain-buckets — one Stormtrooper-esque, and the other a swagged out version of actual astronaut helmets.
An Album Title(??)
Thanks to Shazam and Reddit, a fittingly foggy clue about the upcoming album’s title has surfaced. Apparently, a redditor Shazam’d a looped version of the sample that another redditor made, and the song identification service provided a “>” where the song title should have been. More redditors pondered how awesome it would be if Daft Punk’s album was called something like More Than or Greater Than. In other news, Reddit is awesome.
Always the masters of secrecy, Daft Punk is keeping most of the details of their new album on the DL, but as the date they posted back in September draws nearer, we’re sure to get more tantalizing previews. Keep your ears to the ground (or Reddit) for further information, and keep getting stoked for the new album by watching this ad over and over again.
