NYU Local is proud to present our third installment of Local Sounds, a project conceived in Spring 2011 as Volume 1 and continued that semester with Volume 2. After a hiatus, the project has been revitalized and Local Sounds 2k12 is our biggest compilation yet. There will even be a concert to celebrate this release (details below).
Local spent the semester profiling ten distinct bands comprised of NYU students, including musicians in CAS, Gallatin, Steinhardt and Tisch (we’re still looking for an all-Sternie band for the impending 2k13 edition). Now, we have picked our favorite songs from each group and assembled them into a free (!) ten-track, thirty-minute downloadable album. The mixtape highlights artists ranging in genres such as neo-soul, grandiose rap, guitar-driven indie, space rock, as well post-dubstep and more.
To celebrate this release, NYU Local is hosting a free concert on Dec. 13 at the venue Muchmore’s in Williamsburg. The show will be all ages, free, and includes sets from five of the ten Local Sounds 2k12 artists. Topaz Jones, The Pluto Moons, Niambi, Ch!nch!lla and Sam Wildkatz will perform from 8pm to midnight. There is even a cheap bar, so expect dancing and a party. Dec. 13 is also the last day of classes, so there’s more to celebrate than just our beloved mixtape.
Local Sounds 2k12 by Local Sounds
We believe there is an incredible amount of artistic talent at NYU, and this project aims to share the admirable work of these budding musicians with the rest of the NYU community. That being said, there are more artists at NYU to be featured, and Local Sounds will continue next semester. NYU is known for being the alma mater of many now-famous musicians, including Animal Collective, Lady Gaga, Grizzly Bear, Interpol and one of The Supremes. There’s no doubt in our minds that the Local Sounds contributors could be the next great alumni.
Below includes hyperlinks to the ten profiles we did with the 2k12 mixtape lineup. Please re-read and support these awesome bands. See you on Dec. 13! Get ready for the best Last Day of Classes Party of your college experience.
Album Art by Thomas “Dead Guy” Tait, Poster by Tait (with much appreciated help by Julia Berke, Jorge Morillo and Jason Sherman). This compilation would not have been possible without Andrew Olshevski, Patrick Lyons, Lizzie Azran, Julia Berke and all the artists who contributed. Thank you all so much. ~ Zach Sokol, Entertainment Editor.
