Everyone knows aliens exist. Though no one’s quite figured out what they’re like or what they want, we can still refer to the newly-formed NYC UFO hotline to see what’s good, or just watch them manifest themselves in new music videos. UK beatsmith Star Slinger and director Jordan Kim opt for the latter in the video for this week’s Tuesday Track, “Close to Me”.
24 year-old Manchester native Star Slinger was recently named by the Guardian as “best new act of the year by miles,” for his wizardry with re-arranging snippets from old soul records to construct lush, sunny, J Dilla-esque sample-based compositions.
In addition to offering loads of free music on his website, Star Slinger has also pimped out his Soundcloud page with remixes he did for a variety of artists, from fellow beat constructor Gold Panda to the much loved/hated NYU alumni Childish Gambino. He also did two brilliant remixes on the Morning Benders’ recent great-sounding record for a great cause, the Japan Echo EP, from which all proceeds go to help Japan.
With “Close to You”, a collaboration with Knoxville-based ambient producer Teams, Star Slinger delivers more of what we’ve come to expect. Samples dressed up in warm weather textures get pulled from yesteryear and reassembled over a ballooning beat. It’s a lazy, summertime meditation that may have arrived a bit too early, but demands further collaboration from the duo in the months to come. Check it out:

Cool song.
Reminds me of The Avalanches.
