NYU’s Sexiest Dorms – Gramercy Green

This week’s edition of NYU’s Sexiest Dorms focuses on the luxurious, royal Gramercy Green. Is the $275 million dorm really that legendary? Is it true that only NYU celebrities can live there? Some think it’s just another sterile Founders but further away, while others would offer their future first-born child to the Underworld to have the floor-to-ceiling windows and touch-screen microwave. Sophomore Cody Schaaf’s corner room might sway readers in favor of sacrificing that kid, as his “comfy corner,” excessive holiday lights, and flat screen TV will make any materialist jealous. NYU Local spoke with Schaaf to discuss what makes his room so sexy.

What is your favorite part about your room set-up?

The comfy corner that we’ve built out of dog beds in our corner window.

Does Gramercy live up to the hype?

Eh not really sure about that, the walk to campus sucks but touchscreen microwaves kind of balance it out.

How long did it take you to organize your room during move in?

It took about an hour to move in. It’s been more of an eventual process.

Where do you want to live next year?

I’m actually moving off campus next year.

Do you follow feng shui at all?

We’ve rearranged our bedroom a couple of times to make it flow a little nicer so I guess so.

What are key characteristics of a cool room?

A room has to feel comfortable to visitors. If your friends are over and want to hang out in your room then you’ve done a great job of decorating. Oh and lots of colorful lights are always good too.

What was your room at home like?

I live in California and you have to walk outside of my house to get to my room. The privacy is amazing. [Ed Note: This is surprisingly not “exactly" like Ryan's pool house from The O.C.]

What is your least favorite part of your room?

My least favorite part of my room is that its on the 11th floor of Grammercy. The elevators are never working right.

If you could add one thing to your room, what would it

be?

More lights.

If you could have any celebrity as a roommate, who would it be?

Anthony Bourdain because he’s a badass and he could cook my steaks way better than I ever could.

I’ve had some freshmen ask me questions about housing, and while I’d love to direct them all to Gramercy, one of the biggest peeves of mine about this dorm is the fact that cellphone reception is always lacking, unless you are on Verizon. In which case, it is definitely top in terms of housing. AT&T and T-Mobile often have troubles; I either had to always use my bluetooth headset for phone calls or had my face pressed against the window.

Even Verizon coverage is pretty shotty in Gramercy. I lived there last year and Gramercy was the only place I’d ever drop calls.

The only sexy thing about this dorm room is that it’s a corner room in Gramercy. It’s actually kinda gross. I would make sure my hepatitis shots were up to date before sitting on that dog bed thing.

That’s weird. I lived their sophomore year and I never had trouble with reception, except for that one time when all of T-Mobile’s towers were down.
