Last Friday Tyler, The Creator of LA hip-hop collective OFWGKTA (Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All) premiered his new single “Yonkers,” in a terrifyingly well-produced video, which features the 19-year-old eating a cockroach, vomiting, and hanging himself. Despite the violent imagery, director and producer Wolf Haley (a nickname of Tyler himself) has managed to create a tasteful work of art to be paired with his offensive lyrics and horrifying talent.
While the combination of the song and video is shocking, it is impossible for its grungy beats and rude inflection to disappoint supporters of Tyler’s debut Bastard—self-released and promoted, his first album is “Mostly About His Father, Rape, Box Logos And Jesus. Also Featuring Unicorns And Transexuals.” Yet there’s a certain matured tightness about “Yonkers” that differs from Bastard and proves that the artist’s talent is far from fading. All in all the track should have past, present, and future fans salivating at the thought of his upcoming release.
Currently both “Yonkers” and “Sandwitches” are available for purchase on iTunes, so keep an eye out for Tyler’s sophomore full-length Goblin, which is expected this April from XL Recordings. If you’re not already seeing the Odd Future gang tonight at Santos Party House, be sure to tune in to Late Night with Jimmy Fallon tomorrow night (February 16th) to see them perform with The Roots.
