Facebook Redesigns Its Home Page…Again

Yesterday afternoon, Facebook unveiled its new home page design. Why they felt the need to do this is unclear; people had pretty much gotten used to the old new home page, despite how they may have initially felt about the changes. Facebook claims it wants to “simply the user experience,” which I’m pretty sure is the site’s attempt to make things easier for woefully out-of-touch “technologically inexperienced” old people to create Facebook accounts, stalk their children, and create creepy groups that will embarrass said children later in life. (Side note: why do so many old people seem to forget the rules of grammar when they type something instead of writing it? Dad, come on, you know how to use the comma.)

I’m sure many users have already seen the new home page hit their profile, but in case you haven’t been so lucky, see what some of the changes look like after the jump. (As always, click for bigger.)

Next to the Facebook logo in the upper left are three clickable icons, for friend requests, your Inbox, and any new notifications, respectively. Beneath that, all the old icons that used to be on the right side of the screen are now on the left. The search bar also moved up, which seems superfluous but, I guess, so is Facebook itself. Oh, and that “Ads and Pages” button seems to need a little more debugging; it hasn’t worked for me all evening, bringing me to a blank page instead of a page full of ads that I’d never willfully attempt to see. Oh, and: “Most Recent” = the old Live Feed, “Top News” = the old News Feed.

There’s a spiffy new Photos page, too. I’m happy to see a Summer Heights High reference in this screenshot. My one complaint here is that even when I click “Recent Albums,” updated albums don’t come appear chronologically. But I could very well be missing something obvious here, which would probably shock no one.

That seems to be it, at least for now. I don’t really see why any of this was necessary, but I guess that’s why I’m not the CEO of a multimillion-dollar startup site. YET. “Oldpeopleeatingsadhospitalfood.com” is gonna be a hit, you just wait.

Wow. Pretty blatant ageist bigotry, if you ask me.

It might take some time for everyone’s home page to change, I guess. I remember the last time Facebook changed their home page—and introduced the Live Feed—and it finally hit my profile like a week after it had reached most of my friend’s profiles. I was like, “Why does Mark Zuckerberg hate meeeeee?” Then I remembered he has no idea who I am.

The Facebook redesign is a huge success on their part. They’ve finally updated their design to create a more user-friendly, real-time and collaborative experience. The blogs have been saying that the the way they’ve positioned the most important buttons on the left, in a list is going to give them their first shot at really competing with one of the worst, most outdated pieces of technology on the internet – email.

The rumors are that there will be a lot more features added to inboxing to really give gmail a run for it’s money with their success in thread communicating.
