Tuesday Track: “Hang You Up From the Heavens” by The Dead Weather

This band is also the brainchild of The Kills’ Allison Mosshart, Queens of the Stone Age’s Dean Fertita, and The Raconteurs’ Jack Lawrence. Their debut album, Horehound, is a mixed bag of songs, none of which sound exactly alike, but seem to be filtered though the old fashioned goth-chic filter. There are guttural screams, big rock riffs, eerie synths, and of course the blues beat that Jack White can never seem to fully escape from

All the guitars sound old and a little broken, and the vocals muffled, but the overall effect is compelling. Allison Mosshart is basically Jack White’s female vocal doppelgänger, so their voices work extremely well together. While the favorite single is “Treat Me Like Your Mother,” I think it sounds far too much like a White Stripes rip-off. I prefer the first single, “Hang You From The Heavens,” where Mosshart’s smoky, raw vocals are well showcased and the back groove is about as heavy as they come. It’s the perfect song to blast when you really want to get your neighbors back for playing Lady Gaga on the roof all weekend.

This song was released last March – how about something more up to date? I need more music and love the other suggestions.
