South London based band The xx have been controversial since the debut of their album in August. Quite a few of my Twitter friends are really into music and at least once a day someone sings praises about The xx virtually. Within the next hour, however, that person will get an @reply from another friend telling them they are out of their minds for thinking that The xx have a shred of musical talent. I haven’t made up my mind yet as to which side I’m on–probably somewhere in the middle. Despite the polarizing responses the band produces, I find this song completely enjoyable. Cooly delivered vocals, lo-fi guitars, and a galloping drum pad beat will make your usual 9:30 AM walk to Silver a stealth mission instead of the normal dreary trek.
You can decide whether The xx are amazing or horrible for yourself. They are playing twice (probably more) for CMJ, and then coming back twice after that. So if, by then, there isn’t a Vampire Weekend/MGMT style battle over whether they are the best/worst band ever, I will be very surprised.
The xx play Mercury Lounge on 10/21 (CMJ), Music Hall of Williamsburg on 10/23 (CMJ), Bowery Ballroom on 11/11, and Webster Hall on 12/05.
Check out “Crystalised” here.

unbelievably good. I’m curious what the anti-xx camp has to say–maybe I’m blinded by my affinity to everything pitchfork (http://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/13400-xx/) tells me to listen to, but i honestly see nothing to dislike.
I’m really liking this song.

I almost always immediately love the many music tracks and artists featured on Local, but I’m in the same boat as you Sam as to whether this is actually good or not.
