Considering how awesome the promos made it look, Gossip Girl episode 5, “Rufus Getting Married”, was a major disappointment. In true “WTF OMG” fashion, Lily and Rufus find out that Scott is truly their son at their wedding Dirty dancing havana nights download. The ep is ridden with annoying scenes of Lily and Rufus fighting about nothing. Apparently Lily decides to blame Rufus for Serena not going to Brown while she was away “tending to her sick mother.” (In real life, Kelly Rutherford was on maternity leave and I guess the writers were forced to tie her absence into the story line.)
Although I was getting excited for more Gossip Girl at NYU, there were only two scenes that took place in Ehrlich Residence Hall, in Vanessa’s dorm specifically. Georgina is back in the city, wants Dan’s bod and hates the fact that he is now seeing Olivia Burke (played by Hilary Duff, who was absent this week). Georgina says she will tell everyone that Scott is really Lily and Rufus’s son unless Vanessa gets Dan back for her. We see Vanessa attempting to Photoshop Olivia hooking up with Orlando Bloom, which is clearly a strike at technological relevancy by the Olds attempting to capture our generation’s obsessive computer usage. Lame
The obvious highlight of the episode was seeing the ever-awesome Dorota dressed in Upper East Side garb for Rufus and Lily’s wedding. Everything else was pretty predictable or just the continuation of silly story lines from characters that no one really cares about. Carter Basin (played by Sebastian Stan) is still on the show. Apparently he had gambled away some money and had conned one of Bree Buckley’s relatives into getting engaged to him, only to ditch her after his debt was paid. We find out that Bree, who is dating Nate, was only using him to get to Carter. What was worse than that whole story line of their arch nemesis families was Bree randomly disclosing she had been using Nate the whole time. Maybe they just decided that Joanna Garcia wasn’t working on the show. It is definitely way overdue to have Chace Crawford re-enter the storyline of the other main characters. But maybe he’s been too busy shooting Footloose to stir up any gossip.
The end of the episode left Serena and Nate looking very single after the feuds with their lovers. Hopefully the writers are setting up the perfect Nate and Serena rekindling, and hopefully the next ep won’t be as disappointing as this one.
