Summer is almost officially over, and with it, so are most of the blockbuster movies guaranteed to melt our brains with mindless montages of explosions and boobs. But don’t completely give up hope – summer still has one last gasp in it. Make sure you check out these awesome fall movies for one last round of laughs before Hollywood gets down to Serious Business for awards season.
The Informant (9/18/09): Finally, Matt Damon is in a movie that isn’t a variation or repetition of The Bourne Identity! Instead of being a badass former government agent, Damon plays a hapless, morally confused FBI informant in what is sure to be a hilarious success.
Where the Wild Things Are (10/16/09): If seeing a childhood classic brought to life on the silver screen isn’t enough to convince you to see this (and if it isn’t, you clearly have a heart of stone), then perhaps the awesome soundtrack, written with help from the gorgeous Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, will. Giant lovable monsters AND indie rock cred? Do you really need better reasons?
Zombieland (10/2/09): Remember Adventureland? Remember how Adventureland sucked? Well, Zombieland is Adventureland done right – mostly because movies automatically improve once zombies are added. Zombieland also comes complete with the same awkward kid (Jesse Eisenberg) from Adventureland, this time is a performance that’s actually funny.
Surrogates (9/25/09): Bruce Willis saves the world. Again. This is really the only thing you need to know about Surrogates, but if more information is necessary, watch the trailer embedded below.
Avatar (12/18/09): I’m not sure Avatar the movie will be any good – probably not; the trailer is absolutely bizarre – but the CGI is supposed to be amazing. The movie itself might make for a good laugh. James Cameron spent ten years making this thing, and yet it still looks like a freakish cartoon. Maybe you just can’t best yourself after Titanic?
Jennifer’s Body (9/18/09): The more often I see trailers for this movie, the more I am convinced it might be fun to see just for the camp. Everyone keeps telling me it’s going to be terrible, but even if it is, the world can always use more of Megan Fox’s hotness. Here’s an advance review of the film, written by Tisch film student Ryan Hamelin.
New Moon (11/20/09): I’m not a huge fan of Twilight. In fact, I kind of have a bone to pick with Stephanie Meyer about her vampires. (Sparkles? Seriously?) However, if the screaming crowd of fangirls at the Education Building last summer was any indication, the final movie installment of this book series is sure to be ridiculously popular.

I saw Moon this summer and really liked it, even though the trailer was rather misleading. I thought it was going to be a story about being a working man on the moon, but it turned out to be an existentialist mind-trip. Still, it was rather good.

I am ridiculously excited to see Where The Wild Things Are. I can’t wait until October!

But seriously.
The Invention of Lying looks great.

Ricky Gervais is the man. I think it comes out on October 2nd.
In regards to Avatar, I was equally skeptical about the trailer available online. However, people who saw the 16 minute, in-theaters, IMAX 3D preview of the movie can’t wait to see the whole thing.

The movie was meant to be seen in 3D, in IMAX theaters. It was captured on Super-70 mm film, 16 times larger than regular 35mm, and one of Cameron’s main goals of the movie was to redefine how we look at 3D movies. With all that being said, it’s understandable that a lot of the movie’s intent gets lost in translation when you’re watching it on you’re laptop.

Not necessarily fall movies but that deserve mentioning.
Moon. Didn’t have a lot of advertising or coverage, but look amazing nonetheless. It’s Island fever, except in space and is playing now at select theaters.

And even though this movie comes out in January, I figured I’d throw it up since Twilight was mentioned. Jumping onto the Vampire bandwagon, Daybreakers stars Ethan Hawke and the one guy who wore the blue shirt and the fedora in Jurassic Park. Basically the world is run by tons of vampires who hunts humans for blood. Cool concept and looks interesting.
