Brandon Flowers Continues to Rock Everyone’s Shit

“Human,” the new single from The Killers, raises some deep metaphysical questions that, as a rock journalist, I am tepid about approaching. Like, can music elevate the human spirit? Are there moments where we transcend the boundaries of human form? Have we lost something fundamental with the modernization of society? Can music bring it back?

These in turn lead to even deeper philosophical inquiry: Is Brandon Flowers remotely talented? Does his songwriting process not consist of getting drunk and singing on the spot lyrics to girls he wants to fuck? What has happened to his beard? If you cut him, does he not bleed?

The video is standard Killers fare—the dudes playing in an epic location and Brandon acting like Luke Skywalker. The overhead shots into the desert cliff convince me that it cost millions of dollars, but the whole thing is shot like a soap opera. It was probably the white tiger they helicoptered in that amped up the price. Apparently those things are mad expensive. Also I’m fairly certain he’s the protagonist with love interest. In which case Brandon is the benevolent observer. God, is what that’s called.

This is what happens when instead of being the people who always got beat up in high school, certain rock stars are the people who never were. That video is some goofy shit.

I used to love the Killers. Circa Hot Fuss I was completely obsessed. Now I’m just bored with them. Just so fucking bored.

Apparently the video was lawyered into oblivion, but I found the song elsewhere. It’s like a brilliant parody of a an insufferably self-important rock ballad. The lyrics remind me of when people speak in tongues and act like it’s the word of god coming through them when everyone else knows it’s just gibberish.
