You Can’t Polish a Turd: The VMAs Were a Travesty
There’s just no nice way to put it: the 2008 MTV Video Music Awards sucked. And it didn’t even suck because of a shitastic trainwreck performance like last year, but because it’s obvious that MTV just doesn’t care anymore. The performances—which were mediocre at best—lasted an average of two minutes, the longest of which was Kid Rock doing that country thing, only to be joined half way through by Lil Wayne dressed in something from Pete Wentz’s closet. Maybe I’m just angry because they showed about 10 seconds of Katy Perry and The Ting Tings, but the only thing that made me crack a smile was Russell Brand painting an image of Alex Rodriquez screwing Madonna with a baseball bat. If only.
I will say that I am now a fully converted Jonas Brothers addict, and that their performance at least brought back nostalgic memories of what MTV always meant to me. Watching all those screaming girls fight and claw their way to the stage and then break out into dance moves I’m sure they’ve been practicing in front of mirrors took me back to the good ol’ days of TRL, Carson Daly and when Christina was the underdog.
But perhaps I destroyed this evening from the onset. I watched the latest episode of The Hills—which played before the pre-show—and bored out of my skull by such inanity, I counted the number of times they said the words “friend” or “best friend.” I got 30, but I’m sure I missed a few.
Did anyone watch this? Any angry thoughts for the producers?

Ha, yes I had no idea they still had this event.
Claire, you did our community a great service by taking the blunt of the show directly to the brain.
I love the VMAs. I can’t believe I missed them.

[...] debuted “Love Lockdown” on the VMAs and everyone was forced to reckon with the fact that dude loves auto-tune and that will not change [...]

It’s clear from the lack of comments that NO ONE watched this.
Although it is also not shocking that this show was awful. The VMAs/The Hills comparison is spot on: every year/week people are disappointed but come back like a beaten wife. Why?
