Mad Men’s Butterface

Tags: ,

In season one of Mad Men, buxom Joan tells diminutive Peggy to enjoy the male attention she’s getting because Peggy ain’t much to look at and it’ll all end soon. We all breathed a sigh of relief, finally sure that we weren’t missing anything—that Peggy is, in fact, ass ugly. The season continued, Peggy gained weight due to (spoiler alert) the bastard baby she was carrying and all notions of her being even vaguely attractive were forgotten.

Until, that is, last Sunday night’s episode, “Maidenform.” After a peak at a negligee-clad Betsy and a half-dressed (still buxom) Joan, we get a glimpse of a mystery girl putting on her stocking, standing, looking definitely decent in the legs, stomach and chest. Then BAM, the face.

Hook-nosed, slightly reminiscent of the visage of a down syndrome child, it’s enough to make babies cry, particularly after the visual confirmation that the rest of her is not half bad. As it turns out, little Peggy is not full on ugly, she’s just a brown bagger.  Admittedly makeshift screenshots:

You realize this is a person, not just a character, that you’re shitting all over.

though she looks arguably better than she did in ‘girl, interrupted,’ when she played polly (aka the crazy ass’d burn victim), i still would not even consider a casual hookup with elizabeth moss unless she employed a brown bag.
