Where To Pretend It’s Summer In NYC

Have you heard it’s been kind of cold recently? While it’s been good for some things, it’s been the absolute worst for morale as school starts back up. Who wants to go to their 9:30 class when there’s snow falling? Luckily, we live in New York, so there’s no reason why we can’t make the weather we want all year round. We’ve found some of the best places in the city to pretend it’s still summer!

If You Need to Be Around Living Plants:
The New York Botanical Garden is showcasing some of their permanent collection of tropical flowers in their huge Victorian style glass house, and heating it to between 65 and 75 degrees. So you can walk around and pretend you’re in Hawaii for a few hours before piling on eight pairs of socks to go get groceries. Get tickets here. If you’re not into paying for the chance to get out of the cold, the World Financial Center houses an Arts & Events Program in their Winter Garden Plaza. They periodically put on events and shows, and almost always have art exhibitions up (check out an events calendar here).

If You Want to Be on the Beach:
If the thought of having sand between your toes instead of shoving your feet into another pair of Uggs makes you melt into a little puddle, head over to Chelsea Piers. They have the only indoor sand volleyball club in New York City. They have open play hours as well as offer lessons for both beginners and advanced players. Once you’ve eaten enough sand for a lifetime, stop by Citysun tanning on 13th street and soak up some UV rays. Before you roll your eyes, tanning beds have some benefits beyond helping you not look like a ghost during the winter months.

If You Want to Treat Yo Self:
There are a few really great day spas in New York City but some of them can be quite stuffy. The Great Jones Spa is relaxing but not pretentious and they have a subterranean water lounge complete with steam room, sauna, hot tub and cold plunge. Buy a day pass to the water lounge (or really treat yo self and get a massage) and rotate between hot and cold areas for an afternoon. The Wall Street Bath & Spa is an old-world style bath house for men and women in the financial district. They have numerous hot tubs and cold plunges to keep you exploring all afternoon.
