In our ongoing “A Closer Look” series, NYU Local photographers provide us with fresh, unexpected, and complicating views of New York City.
When people visit me here, I see my home with fresh eyes, reflecting on my first impressions and shaping theirs. I look around and feel grateful. People dream of coming here, of living our lives. We face unfriendly neighbors, a lack of greenery, decrepit buildings, overpriced cigarettes– these are a small price to pay for this playground we’re granted access to. (Photos after the jump)
We’re embedded within it, so sometimes it’s difficult to keep a proper sense of scale. Each of these photographs captures a birds-eye view from NYU buildings, which are far more vulnerable to becoming pedestrian. This photoessay expresses my gratitude for being able to exist in grandiose places that manage to become small, with time.
