On Saturday, four people were killed on the subway tracks in four separate incidents, marking one of the bloodiest days in New York transit history.
At 2am, an elderly man was found at the bottom of the Elmhurst Station in Queens, a stop on the elevated R train. After being rushed to the Elmhurst Hospital Center, where he died an hour later. “Investigators believe the victim slipped and tumbled down the steps, striking his head,” The Daily News reports.
Later, at 8:30am, Brian O’Mara, a twenty-two year old from Long Island, was wandering around the underground tunnels near the Union Square L line station when he was hit by a train. It is unclear why exactly he was walking around in the tunnels.
In Brooklyn, at 4pm, a man was run over at the Nostrand station by a southbound A train. According to the New York Post, “A friend at the station said the man worked at the station selling Metrocard swipes and that his body was discovered by a train conductor.”
Another accident occurred on the L train rails when a man was caught between a subway and the Sixth Avenue station at 10pm. Gothamist relates a Reddit witness account from the horrific scene: “I just saw a man get ran over by an L train. It was… awful. Blood and intestines covering the platform. I don’t know if he jumped or fell. An EMT that came over said that this happens on average twice a week.”
While NYMag notes that police do not suspect “any criminal or suspicious activity linked to any of the deaths,” it is still a sobering reminder of the dangers on the tracks. Remember: a safe distance is two bumps into the bumpy yellow.
