The incredibly geeky Social Media Week launched in New York and five other cities around the world yesterday, offering a long list of events that your mother with an aol.com email wouldn’t be invited to. Yes, this means your Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Tumblr, WordPress, LinkedIn, 4square, and even Myspace accounts might finally have some value.
Held in various venues around the city (including NYU), the conference is co-sponsored by popular media outlets like the Times, Wired and Time Inc. The advisory board also includes some head honchos of new media, including the founder of Mashable and a global media exec at Razorfish. But since this is “Social” Media Week, organizers are encouraging guests to host their own events, to which the guests replied via Twitter, “does this mean we have to meet each other in person?”
Unfortunately, tickets for the best events (see below) are absurdly pricey , if not sold out already. But this is why social media geeks also love craigslist. And for a conference dedicated to new media, Social Media Week’s website is surprisingly difficult to navigate. So here’s our own concise list of the top events to consider:
