Death at a funeral download.jpg” alt=”Egle Tvirbutaite-thumb-500×749″ width=”188″ height=”283″ />Sweet, sweet autumn — cold, crisp winds, lattes, and orange tree leaves. While summer, consisting of traipsing around in high-waisted shorts and carefree floral camis, has definitely passed, fall has pleasantly arrived. During the autumn season, I’m usually trying to get my ducks in a row/find all my ducks and once again, try to start the school year convincing myself I’m reasonably competent. This all comes down to my point: how can I be competent if not properly dressed? And a poetic simplicity of clean aesthetics in my dressing will obviously translate into a type of clear-mindedness, right? Right.
And therefore, in a roundabout response to Josh’s request for a women’s fall style guide, I offer the following as suggestions for all the lovely ladies of NYU academia mulling over their closets every morning.
Josh brought up a very good point in his “queefy” post. No, not the point about sexual activities in kayaks, but the point that you must anticipate the cold mornings and the following sunny afternoons. This is exactly why fall is the ordained season of cardigans and blazers.
I advocate for simple cardigans, in more neutral colors or possibly with a pair of collegiate stripes on the sleeve (if you want to go Take Ivy). Layer them on top of a floral, printed, or textured blouse. But keep the cardigan simple, it’ll go with more things. I really like the longer cardigans that go past the waist. A lot.
The women’s blazer is also a big part of this particular fall’s wardrobe. Traditionally masculine, the blazer has been tailored to fit a women’s body. Club Monaco has a great selection of blazers of the edgier variety. It’s androgynous, biz cas, and everything I like about the world.
Ok, so leather boots might be obvs for fall style, but a beautiful pair of tall or mid-calf leather boots with a small heel can make their début in the fall and last through tromping around in the cold, wet winter. So once again, kind of obvs. I guess what I’m trying to say is, rain boots suck: it’s better to invest in leather boots.
Veering away from discussions of boot hierarchy, and as it is fall and the weather isn’t frosty yet, you can still prance around the city in ballet flats. But with socks! Preferably, neon socks! It’s kind of a goofy look, but it’s cute.
The lovechild of skinny jeans and leggings. While squirming to get a denim waistband over my hips isn’t the most ideal way to start my day, I wear denim leggings almost every other day. They’re simple and clean, helping to de-kitsch an outfit.
Ankle jeans, too, are appropriate right now. The J. Crew ankle toothpick jean is really nice, flattering, and comes in good washes. And if you don’t feel like spending (or have) the money right now, you could also just roll your jeans up to an inch above the ankle. Trust me, it doesn’t look nearly as hillbilly as it sounds — it’s actually kind of an Audrey Hepburn from Funny Face look. That’s what you were going for, right?
I’m into anything sequined, or tastefully gaudy.

@dene, it completely depends on your body type and buying the correct size. The type of people that can wear skinny jeans can wear denim legging. I have them and I get compliments on them all the time.

[...] Amy suggested earlier today, you should probably do your fall shopping now, another reason to cross the river. BK [...]

Denim leggings? DENIM leggings??? I’ve seen some people wearing them on the subway and those things are not attractive whatsoever.
