Courtesy of the New York Times and a pissed off text from my Battery Park-residing mother, one of the several Air Force Ones the President uses from time to time, with the guidance of the F.A.A. and two intense F-16s, flew close to the top of skyscrapers in the Financial District and Jersey City.
They seem to have been taking part in either a photographing session with the city or the filming of some kind of scene. The details are still hazy.
What is known is that residents and workers in the area evacuated many buildings and shared their discontent with their fellow evacuees. Some of the photographs coming out now are pretty frightening (especially the doozy above, courtesy of NYTimes reader Jim Brown), and the fact that little was actually done to warn citizens is a sad state of affairs in today’s society, in an area still reeling from the attacks of almost eight years ago.

We feel for you, and realize this was scary ,however, think for a moment and realize the security threat that could have occurred if a “notice” went out advising of a “fly-over”
We love all of New york and understand….your concerns..I’m just asking you to think about it.

Gotta keep that fear in the people, keep those NY’ers in the f’n cholk hold.
photo op for an F16 to take photos of air force one? hovering over downtown manhattan buildings for a pamphlet, web site or visual to use on letter head? how natural would it be to have air force one flying 900 feet over ground zero? it’s ridiculous, and it obviously was planned for a reason.
they easily could have manipulated any photo of AF1 in the sky they would have wanted, without the hassle, waste of money and most of all hysteria and fear to the citizens affected by 9/11. insensitive, politically motivated and just plain ridiculous. i lost a friend on 9/11. somebody should lose their job over this. plus, i had a friend have to evacuate a building near the World Trade Center today because of this fiasco this morning. He was freaking out because of the orders he was getting.
Our government authorized this? Doesn’t anyone else think this is stupid?!! Aren’t their more important things to work on then low flying press photos of pretty presidential looking planes over ground zero?
Where are the 9/11 family members on this?
Someone should lose their job over this.
fear fear and more fear

@Michael Cortez
Imagine a day that is clear and perfect, as September 11th, 2001 was. Now imagine one of the world’s largest planes circling the skyscrapers of lower Manhattan. imagine the sound, the sight from skyscrapers at the eye level as the plane. Think of the rumbling that must have been felt. That happened at 10:00am today.
Ground Zero is still there – barren and desolate, half of the businesses that shut down after the Financial District become a ghost town are still closed, health concerns are still felt, and New Yorkers who were there eight years ago still look up each time a plane flies next to the city on its way to La Guardia.
It’s not about being scared. It’s an issue of being brought backwards in time to the worst day in this city’s existence.

i have to agree with Lucas.
i’m not suggesting ny shouldve freaked out and scream omg terrorists…but lmao would it really have taken that much effort for the federal gov to tell the mayor, ny officials, or office managers or w/e to make sure they avoided evacuation and hysteria???

What about the expense of flying Air force 1 and what about transparency?
During eight years of the George Bush administration, the dumbest thing that I can recall the Bush people doing was putting up the Mission Accomplished sign on the ship. It has taken the Obama people less than 100 days to do something which I regard as equally dumb.
Richard Roberts
I believe that this manuever by the Obama Administration was done to play on New Yorker’s fear. It was definately a very dumb decision on his part and I don’t believe for a minute that he had no idea that it was going to be done. If he truely didn’t, then I have to ask the question “Who is really in-charge in this Administration?”
As for George Bush and his putting the “Mission Accomplished” sign up on the ship, he was right. The mission of ousting the Saddam Husein government from power was accomplished, something that the previous Administration was to scared to do.
It was the second mission or “Policing Phase” that was a failure. This was done to cowtow to the Liberals so that the US Military didn’t come of as looking as overbearing. Who knows what language we would be speaking if these same Democrats were in power during WWII.
Richard Roberts
(Revision of my last two sentences in my first statement) This was done to cowtow to the Democratic Liberals so that the US Military didn’t come off looking like it was overusing its strength. Who knows what language we’d be speaking today if these same Democrats were in power during WWII. (24 year Military Veteran and proud of it)
