Since I moved to the US, my Chinese New Years have been pretty tame compared to the three-day celebration/school holiday we had in Singapore, my hometown.  But if you want to experience a little bit of the festivity that I grew up with, head down to Chatham Square (Bowery and Mott St.) in Chinatown between 11:30 am to 2:30 pm for the Fire Cracker Ceremony.  There will also be a parade of lion and dragon dances (I can hear you ang mohs saying, “What in the world of Jackie Chan is she talking about?”) winding throughout Chinatown, so if you stick around and keep your ears up, you will likely run into it before it concludes at 3 pm.

How will I be spending my Chinese New Year, you ask?  Well, unfortunately, very much like an ang moh. I will be at my unpaid internship from 10 to 6, and then going to a two-hour journalism ethics class.  Boy, do I miss Singapore right now.
