As if this city couldn’t get any more ironic, ex-Ohioan Craig Zucker is bottling New York tap water and selling it for $1.50. Branded Tap’d NY, the product promotes a locavore initiative and pitches the winning reputation of New York City’s tap water as its main selling point. Zucker believes that New Yorkers should rely on their own pure, highly accessible resource instead of importing it from overseas. “Fiji and France are doing fine without us,” the website states in its manifesto. Sounds utterly Whole Foods-ian.
The water is a slightly more regulated version of the liquid that flows from our faucets. Reverse osmosis removes any impurities, making the water as fresh as possible. Isn’t that what the Brita’s for?
According to the New York Post, right now Tap’d NY is only available in Chelsea and West Village markets where it remains virtually untouched. Probably because people are busy drinking the same thing for free.
As Zucker’s family asserted in the Post, “He’s either brilliant or really stupid.” To me, this guy’s idea screams “crazy mother-Zucker” rather than “genius”. I can’t think of too many New Yorkers who would spend money on such a non-novelty that they can obtain with as little effort as the turning of a knob. Craig Zucker would have more luck pitching his product outside of New York City.
