As we’ve previously mentioned, Harvest in the Square, an upscale food and wine tasting event, is happening right now in Union Square. But cutting through the live jazz and the ritzy chatter of wealthy foodies is the sound of clanging pots and pans as dozens of people dressed in chef attire are protesting the event.
Protesters from Save Union Square are shouting, banging on things, and generally making as much noise as possible as they circle around the tents in which Harvest in the Square is set up. There are fancily dressed diners inside the event looking pretty embarrassed, and it’s unclear whether the coordinators have addressed what’s going on.
The protestors and passing out flyers titled “Parks Are For People Not For Profit,” describing the “walled off” event as part of “the permanent, long-term vision that some people have for Union Square.” Harvest in the Square is sponsored by Union Square Partnership (USP), which “is responsible for the controversial plan to privatize the Pavilion building of Union Square Park.”
The flyer continues: “We are here tonight to let USP know that the citizens of New York have NOT approved this plan to turn over public land to private hands. We will NOT lay down and quietly accept this land grab. We will PUSH BACK against the privatizers and their plans to sell out the public good.” It goes on to call for a boycott of Whole Foods, Barnes and Noble, and other corporations involved with USP.
It seems that the diners will try to ignore the protestors and continue to carry out the event, but it doesn’t seem like Save Union Square (and their pots and pans) will be leaving anytime soon tonight.
