Halloween in New York is fun enough by itself, but if you’re looking for a more concentrated Halloween experience, a haunted house is something you can spend your hard-earned recession dollars on. Kenny listed the notable ones in the city, and I took it upon myself to visit one. Because haunted houses are usually campy and uncomfortable, Nightmare: Vampires (Broadway & Houston) is predictably fun, but I was more scared waiting in line than I was exiting into the gift shop.
Every year, Nightmare features a different theme based on ideas submitted to them. Since Stephanie Meyer has now successfully turned the masses on to poorly-executed vampire porn in every medium, it’s not surprising they didn’t choose something more original. The haunted house begins as a tour for MoVA, the fake Museum of Vampyric Artifacts. It was a good gimmick, since the quiet and the fake blood felt properly suspenseful.

NYJew News Flash!: NYU Top Private School For Jews
News Flash!: NYU Top Private School For Jews
The Reform Judaism Magazine rated NYU (NYJew?) as the #1 private school for Jewish college students, according to the Washington Square News. The “Top 60 Schools Jews Choose” list ranked NYU just ahead of Boston University and uptown neighbor Yeshiva University.
In case you didn’t notice all those empty seats during Yom Kippur, nearly 30% of the NYU population (6,000 students) is Jewish, which is 70% lower than the completely Jewish Yeshiva. Still, NYU remains the most preferred, probably due to how well NYU accommodates to Jewish practices. Reform Judaism also noted that NYU offers approximately 70 Jewish courses, far more than any private school not named Yeshiva. These numbers are an increase from last year’s rankings, which show that NYU was only 21% Jewish in 2009 and offered less Jewish courses.
For public schools, the University of Florida ranked #1. Apparently there’s a lot of Jews down there too.

NYU BS The 10 Biggest Lies NYU Ambassadors Tell
The 10 Biggest Lies NYU Ambassadors Tell

Will Pulos’ Confessions of An NYU Admissions Ambassador post was attacked by a group of incredibly gung-ho admissions ambassadors last week. The beat down was vicious and riddled with cliches about friendship. This week, Will defends his stance further.
Even though the “living document” that was once my NYU admissions ambassador handbook has died (RIP), I was still able to leaf through its recently deceased pages and find the 10 biggest lies of that shining program on a hill. (Clearly, certain ambassadors’ recent description of me as “embittered” and “crass” is quite accurate.)
- Ambassadors are told to tell their personal NYU stories on their tours. This story, however, can’t include “parties, drinking, illegal drug use, student suicides, or celebrity gossip. These things should never be discussed.” I got nothing.
- One of the areas you are told to cover is the size of the University. One suggested statement: “It doesn’t feel as big as it is because of res halls, clubs, and academic programs.” Sure. My Murder She Wrote fan club basically makes me feel like I’m living in a co-op at Vassar. Continue…
Did CAS Council President Megan Cruz Lie to WSN to Get Sympathetic Press?
Did CAS Council President Megan Cruz Lie to WSN to Get Sympathetic Press?
After three articles and over thirty comments, last week CAS Student Council President Megan Cruz approached WSN about the CAS constitution controversy. WSN Editor, Rachel Holiday Smith, who spoke to Local about a policy clarification, explains:
[She] came to us because she was extremely upset with the way things were reported by NYULocal. She said that she was misquoted, the council issues were misrepresented, and that Lucas did not identify himself as a reporter until she asked about it specifically.
If this is true, and Cruz reached out in this way, it raises a lot of questions. In the 8 days Lucas’s article was up, Megan Cruz never contacted NYU Local about any misquotes. Lucas, who sat next to me at Think Coffee while he made the call, was transparent. He asked the CAS Council President if she would speak on the record, she agreed, and only quotes after that point were used. Why would Megan claim to be misquoted but never ask for a correction? Why would she make it seem as though Lucas was misleading about his status as a reporter when she agreed to an on-the-record interview? Continue…

WSN Roundup 4/9/09
- No matter who wins the Columbia/NYU battle of the bands, they still have to take the 1 train all the way back to Morningside Heights.
- WSN finds those Krod Mandoon gay jokes amusing. I guess I don’t have a sense of humor.
- Reminder: we have sports teams.

Say Hello to NYU Abu Dhabi?
Say Hello to NYU Abu Dhabi?
PHOTOS REMOVED
After years of contentious discussion on how NYU should expand to Abu Dhabi, we now have photos. NYU student senate member Steven Jean, who traveled to Abu Dhabi as part of a special trip, sent us images of the proposed expansion. The model is not yet finalized, but shows general ideas on the scale and style of the new NYU Abu Dhabi campus. The idea is to combine the look and feel of an Islamic Village with that of Greenwich Village.
“The aim of the architect was to create a place that had identity from the beginning with an emphasis on ‘flexible boundaries.’ As you might notice in the photo there is a main street running across the whole campus. The purpose of this is to facilitate the network between the pedestrian campus. There will be a center plaza (a Washington Square Park of sorts) and two smaller plazas at each end on this main street.”
More photos after the jump. Continue…

Psychology NYU Undergrads Diagnose Mental Disorders
NYU Undergrads Diagnose Mental Disorders
Regardless of how often our “#1 Dream School” prompts us to whine, one thing that NYU deserves props for is having extremely cool classes, like the one I’m taking now, “Child and Adolescent Psychopathology.”
The introductory course of the Child and Adolescent Mental Health minor, “Child and Adolescent Psychopathology” deals with mental disorders in children and adolescents, teaching students everything from disease etiology to epidemiology and diagnosis. What that means in human words is that students learn about the causes of mental disorders, factors that influence them, ways to identify and diagnose them and everything in between. Learning disorders, mental retardation, eating disorders… you name it and it’s probably covered in this class. Continue…

Mo Money Mo Problems Free Cash in Times Square!
Free Cash in Times Square!
I’m not sure if this is still going on, but The New York Times reported this morning that the ad company Bailout Booth was giving out $50 to anyone willing to stand in line and ask for it as part of a decidedly brilliant marketing ploy. Perched at a rented space on 7th Avenue and 46th Street, the company’s founder, “Bail Out Bill,” (ha ha get it?) probably made more than a few people’s days with his free cash scheme. If any of you head up to Times Square, be sure to send us a tip about whether or not the Bailout Booth is still operating/funding people’s alcohol budgets for the weekend.

The NY Post is reporting that Ann Coulter broke her jaw and had to have it wired shut. If you’re like me, you were probably hoping somebody was just trying to shut her up.
