Prop 8 Passage Means Gay Marriage Should Wait
Following Editorial was submitted to the NYU Local opinion section. Anyone with an nyu email address and a full name can post to this section.
Let the yelling commence…this time at me. I just so happen to agree with Mike and the substance of what he wrote about in his column about Prop 8. That’s not to say that Mike is some sort of sad, misunderstood artist who needs sympathy; rather, I think everyone’s missing the boat here.
Most likely due to the polarization of the last 8 years, our generation has a hard time accepting the fact that not everything is so black and white, or perhaps in this case, red and blue. Allowing gay marriage isn’t as easy as amending a law on a piece of paper. Permitting it would change the health care system, the legal system, and tax codes. It would also raise the question of just how much the federal government wants to expand its services. Continue…

Barack Hussein Obama: If That Ain’t Country, I’ll Kiss Your Ass

A badass name makes a real country singer. Three names make an outlaw.
David Allan Coe, for instance. The self-vindicating “longhaired redneck” wrote songs for years simply about being country as hell, also drunk and pissed off. An outlaw is a little like a maverick, except he’s supposed to brag about what he is. It’s part of his identity, and if you don’t believe him, he’ll kick your ass. As David Sedaris recently wrote regarding John McCain, a true maverick would never say he was one—not so, for badass outlaws. They sing about how badass they are all the time, and they are.

NYC Diaries: November Fourth, Two-Thousand Eight
Editor’s Note: This is an unedited, submitted piece, originally posted on Facebook. If you want to contribute your own writing about your experiences in the city, please email the piece or a link if it’s already published to nicole.he@nyulocal.com.
November fourth, year two-thousand eight. On top of a momentously huge rooftop on second avenue looking at the heart of the east village, the heart of democracy in New York City which is in the heart of democracy in New York, and maybe even the heart of what seems now, in this perfect moment, what may just be rising to become again the heart of democracy in perhaps this whole beautiful world. Barack Hussein Obama has won the hearts and votes of America, and he is our new president.

The Federal Reserve and You
The Following opinion piece was submitted to the NYU Local Submitted Opinion section. Anyone with an NYU email address and a full name can post to this section.
This is the second part of my opinion piece on the current economic crisis. If you haven’t already read the first introductory piece, you can find it here.
The lending practices of Wall Street have clearly been detrimental to our economy but in relation to those of our own government, some would argue that Wall Street was but a pin prick that popped the bubble; the U.S. Government was the one blowing hot air into the system. The same type of lending practices that led to the sub-prime mortgage meltdown are also typical of our government’s relationship with lenders around the world.

Economic Crisis 101
It is hard not to know something, if anything, about the financial crisis hitting Wall Street, U.S. politics, and your parents wallets recently. Yet, as undergraduate students trying to juggle our academic, social, and budding professional lives, it is understandable that most of us, and the American public, remain relatively uninformed on the nature of the crisis. There are, of course, different perspectives as to what caused the crisis and what should be done about it, but most, if not all, will look towards the sub-prime lending and adjustable-rate mortgage (ARM) “meltdown” when discussing the recent collapse of some the world’s largest financial giants.

Hey MSM, Stop With the Sexist Palin Coverage
The Following Editorial was submitted to the NYU Local opinion section. Anyone with an nyu email address and a full name can post to this section.
Since Sarah Palin was nominated as Vice President on the Republican ticket weeks ago, she’s been subjected to a barrage of misogynistic media criticism. But does any of this anti-woman talk sound familiar? Why of course! Just when I thought we left the days of Hillary’s pearls, cleavage and cackle in the dust, the media got me again.
Obviously, we all know that John McCain chose Sarah Palin for political reasons. She’s the most popular governor in the country, with an 80 percent approval rating. And yes, she is a woman.

Is the Concept of Popular Music Dead?
Originally posted at Jess and Josh Talk About Stuff
If the Video Music Awards proved anything, it’s that, well, MTV has lost its touch. But more than that, it showed that the level of music we call “popular” has broadened its scope over the past couple of years, which actually works to contradict the idea of said music’s “popular” status in the first place. Let me explain.

Salvia Sought By Dumb Teenagers For Its Spiritual Revelations

Was I the only one who was completely surprised by the article in yesterday’s New York Times on the rampant salvia use that is going around the country? I know Gawker reported briefly a couple months back about how New York state is thinking of banning this hallucinogen because of Youtube videos of kids acting crazy of taking a hit, but that was the first time I heard about it, and I promptly forgot about it. So maybe the New York Times actually reported on something that was new and relevant to the youth demographic. Or maybe I’m just slow.

The Election is a Circus
Since John McCain announced his running mate about a week and a half ago, the general public has been blitzed by a fountain of information regarding Sarah Palin. It’s almost like the press is trying to make up for their ignorance of her during the first few hours of veep candidancy. I will never forget the reaction from one of my editors at the news organization that I worked at this summer– he had received the news via phone at around 10 in the morning– “Who the fuck… ARE YOU KIDDING ME?” before he started laughing.
He wasn’t the only one who reacted with humor to this. A friend who works at MSNBC said, “At first I thought it was funny. But then I started thinking about it, and I just got really angry.”
To be honest, I haven’t taken it too seriously, mostly because I trust that most Americans will just call bullshit. I just really want to believe that most Americans are intelligent enough to see past this gimmick. I should probably clarify here that when I say “see past this gimmick” I don’t mean “Any intelligent American will vote for Obama.” What I mean is that I hope voters, even the Republicans, can look at Ms. Palin and say, “The reason why McCain chose her is not because of her experience or credentials.”

Washington Square Snark
The first days of school are always hectic. New classes, senile professors, crowded classrooms, early papers, and waiting forty fucking minutes for a tissue-thin pizza at Kimmel are just some of then fun things that await us this fall! But apparently we can add to that list trudging through CONSTRUCTION EVERYWHERE AROUND THE PARK.
