Developing: Protesters on Top of Silver

122People in hoodies and masks are on top of the Silver Center. They have removed the NYU flag on the top of the building and hung a banner from the western face of the building. More details as we find out what in the hell is going on.

12:37 – Looks like the banner reads, “Fuck Tuition Hikes.” TBNYU hasn’t taken credit, so it remains to be seen what’s happening. The guard I talked to in Silver had no idea what had happened.

12:56 – Actually, this probably isn’t a TBNYU stunt. Given the beeper activity, this looks like more Eucleian Society stuff.

1:27pm – We received a comment from a purported Eucleian Society member, using a seemingly fake e-mail address, that their Society is not involved with the banner protest. The e-mail came from the 5th floor of the 7 W. 12th St. building an NYU IP address. We are looking to talk to a member of the Society for more info: please e-mail us at nyulocaleditor@gmail.com.

More pics after the jump.

Will Mayor Bloomberg be a ‘Special Surprise Guest’ at Gallatin’s Open House? Nope.

Gallatin is having an offical open house for it’s renovated building tonight and we’ve received tips from  students that their professors have been buzzing about a ’Special Surprise Guest.’ Could this be Bloomberg coming to announce his rumored donation?   Martin Lipton, Chairman of the NYU Board of Trustees, and  J-Sex will both be attending.

Update: Whoever the guest is requires quite a bit of security.  5 NYPD officers are near the building and NYU Guards are standing outside the door.

6:12: Mayor Bloomberg is a no show. Three ’special guests’ were on the list to come, none of them made the event .

Did Mayor Bloomberg Fund Gallatin’s 27 Million Dollar Renovation?

bloombergWe have a tip that NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg is a major donor to the Gallatin School of Individulized Study’s recent multi-million dollar renovation.

As of yet, no major figures have come forward and the renovation has gone without an official opening reception. Gallatin’s renovation website attributes the funding as coming from “Gallatin alumni, parents, and other donors,” but 27 million dollars is hard to come by when it’s piecemeal. Both Gallatin and the Development Office declined to comment on the veracity of the claim. Continue…

CAS Student Council Votes to Block Nearly All of CAS From Running For Office

cropped The CAS Student Council radically changed its constitution last week and set a baffling restriction on who is able to run for its highest office. In a nearly unanimous decision, CAS has made three semesters of government involvement a requirement to run for Student Council President (two for Treasurer). Should these changes be ratified, the Council, which defines itself as the “only official assembly of students that has the right to represent students in this college,” will block the overwhelming majority of CAS students from ever leading the Council. Juniors, sophomores, and second year transfer students new to student government will never even have the opportunity to run for President.

Why? Megan Cruz, the current CAS Student Council President, defended the constitution’s changes by saying, “Students best suited have already proved their dedication to this Council and its efforts by showing up to weekly meetings and helping to plan our various programs and initiatives…To be honest, this is about ensuring the preservation and continuing success of the Council for the foreseeable future. It’s important that the newly elected President and Treasurer come in with knowledge of the ins and outs of the Council.” Continue…

Update: Sexton Totally Doesn’t Call for Geithner’s Resignation

3:31 PM UPDATE: Professor Rogan Kersh, who we got the original information from, left a comment below. It turns out that Bloomberg’s morning report was wrong. It is quoted here:

Today on Bloomberg TV: Representative Chris Van Hollen appears at 8:05 a.m. to talk about the financial rescue plan; New York University President John Sexton appears at 8:30 a.m. to talk about his calls for Tim Geithner’s resignation; Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal appears at 2 p.m. to discuss the AIG bonuses; Representative John Campbell appears at 2:11 p.m. to discuss the economy; and FDIC Chairman Sheila Bair appears at 4 p.m. to discuss economic regulation.

CORRECTION: The information below is incorrect – what happened was actually the opposite. We got the information from a public policy professor who said he watched the interview, and we apologize for not confirming it until after posting. We are working on determining how this turned into a terrible game of telephone.

Here is an email from John Beckman, whom we emailed for a confirmation:
“I was there. The reporter asked about calls for Geithner’s resignation; John said just the reverse — that Geithner, Larry Summers, and Ben Bernanke were exactly the team you want to steer you through the financial crisis.

John was chair of the board of the NY Federal Reserve — and co-chair of the search committee — at the time Geithner was appointed president of the NY Fed.”

The video clip is about 4 minutes in here, under “In-Depth Look – Unviversities [sic] Vs Recession Watch Tue,24 Mar 2009 08:32 ET.”

Our president J-Sex, who was the Federal Reserve Bank of New York’s former Chairman of the Board, called for the resignation of Secretary of Treasury Timothy Geithner this morning on Bloomberg TV. Apparently, the two knew each other, as Geithner was the president of the NY Federal Reserve while J-Sex was the Chairman.

Note: We got this information from from a public policy professor who watched the 8:30 am interview.

If you have information or a video clip, email nyulocaleditor@gmail.com.

Tisch Film Administration Responds to Petition With Equally Long and Sentimental Letter

In case you are too busy re-scheduling your senior thesis to read the thousand word letter, we have consolidated and bulleted the main points:

  • This has been a problem for the past five years that we have failed to fix in a sustainable way.
  • We warned you in the fall of 2007 that while you were covered individually for over a million dollars in insurance, a student actually needing a tenth of this could destroy our program’s policy.
  • The kid who lost $100,000 in lenses was warned a number of times, like all Tisch students, and probably is to blame.
  • We changed this policy to prevent our insurance from being taken away in 2009 but even that may not work.
  • We are sad but everyone is sad now too because of the economy.
  • You should be happy with the equipment we provide because our faculty reviews it – those who have ‘grander’ ideas hurt the ones that don’t.
  • You can get more Sandbags from us if you want. Those are cheap.
  • We have four people that will be visiting your classes, there you can vent your frustrations.
  • We are doing everything we can to ensure you don’t transfer to USC.

Full letter after the jump. Continue…
