Breaking: Everyone Thinks NYU Sucks Way More Than Columbia
In a stunning new development, most people seem to think that Columbia is, like, way better than NYU. Case in point this time is an ongoing NBC poll asking respondents “which university is the best in the city?”
Because the trophy is Mike (the paunchy dude at left)–whether that means a Mike statuette, the knowledge of knowing that if Mike could be made into a trophy, you’d have one, or something else entirely remains unclear–we’re not terribly concerned about missing out on this prize. Nonetheless, all this NYU bashing gets a bit old. First we get it from Columbia kids flaunting their “campus” and their “ivy league” status. Then from a certain hot, possibly homosexual movie star who may or may not currently be enrolled in Queer Cinema and totally doesn’t love us the way that we love him. And now from NBC online readers? This abuse must end.
You’ve got 13 days to rock this particular vote. Get ‘er done.

Nyle is Not Just a River in Egypt: An Interview with an NYU Student on the Verge of Graduating as a Hip-Hop Star
Nyle Emerson, an NYU senior, has recently begun to make a name for himself across the internet for his impressive and catchy video “Let the Beat Build.” The video has swept its way across hip hop blogs and gone legitimately viral, garnering over 10,000 hits in just three days. Though it’s this video that caught NYU Local’s attention, Emerson has been working hard since high school to achieve his dream of becoming the next rap superstar, performing shows at the Bowery Poetry Club and compiling audio and video EPs. The first thing you’ll notice about Emerson is that he’s not your stereotypical hip hop hopeful. Thoughtful, incredibly intelligent and endlessly passionate about his art, I had to restrain myself from wanting to jump across the room and hug him. Entertainment Editor Joe Coscarelli and I sat down with Nyle yesterday at the Clive Davis Recording Studio at 194 Mercer to discuss music, hip hop nonprofits and the making of “Let the Beat Build.”

An Interview with NYU Professor and Novelist Jonathan Safran Foer
Jonathan Safran Foer had Googled me. Since January I’d been pestering him about doing an interview for us, and finally he agreed to a casual jaunt around the Village while I anxiously gripped my recorder and tried not to come off as a bumbling, neurotic fangirl. (Epic fail, BTW) But then he admitted to Googling me, and suddenly this was even less real than it had seemed while dorkily practicing my interview questions on the cab ride there: this was my favorite contemporary author, the one who penned infamously polarizing novels like Everything is Illuminated and Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, and there he was in this ridiculous knit cap, acting eager to answer my questions and admitting to researching me on the internetz. I had long considered the day I would get to ask him anything I wanted, and now that that day had arrived, I kind of felt like vomiting. But I didn’t. I didn’t! And indeed I got the chance to interview one of the most talked-about contemporary authors in New York.

Hillary Clinton To Address NYU Grads at Commencement, Be Given Honorary Degree
It’s official, Hillary Clinton will be speaking at NYU’s May 13th commencement at Yankee Stadium. But Hillary’s speech isn’t free, she’ll be walking away with an honorary Doctor of Laws degree. It’s sort of like NYU’s version of an Oscars swag bag.
Also receiving honorary degrees are Playwright John Patrick Shanley, bad ass White House Journalist Helen Thomas, Nobel Prize winning Physicist Albert Fert, and Health Advocate Jessie Gruman.

How a Fringe Group at NYU Went From Being Disliked to Loathed – The Story of the TBNYU! Kimmel Occupation
Amidst the swelling crowd at Kimmel’s cafeteria Wednesday night, NYU Local’s Charlie Eisenhood began what has now become a legendary lesson in liveblogging with the prophetic words:
Somebody just asked me if I needed a number for legal counsel if I get thrown in jail. Looks like this might be a bit more than a dance party.
