Flurry Turns Five!

Last night, the NYU community took over the Central Park Wollman Rink for the fifth installment of Flurry, an event put on by the Inter-Residence Hall Council. With over 1600 students attending, the event proved that there is some type of community here at NYU.

This year’s Flurry included free ice skating, candy, five (count ‘em: FIVE) Housie Maguire-shaped cakes, “J-Sexy and I Know It” t-shirts (with proceeds going to the American Red Cross) and other types of NYU love. With the success of this event and the celebration of its 5th year anniversary, we decided to go behind the scenes and see what really goes down at Flurry.

[PHOTOS] Kreayshawn Performed At Irving Plaza But Should We Care?

Last night, Kreayshawn played to a half full crowd at Irving Plaza for part of her Group Hug Tour with Rye Rye, Honey Cocaine, and Chippy Nonstop. The place might not have been at capacity but the room was filled with diehard Kreayshawn fans who were going bananas as she bounced around the stage with her hype-man. Looking around the venue, one could not help but wonder, “what am I doing here and what are all these other people doing here??”

[PHOTOS] College Students Pretend They’re Back In The Factory At The Met

Last night, the Metropolitan Museum hosted “Warhol’s Factory at the Met” for college students because, according to the event page, we’re “all that and a can of soup.” It is true: the Met thinks very highly of us, and they frequently host events: Last year, they hosted An Oasis at the Met. College students in the surrounding Manhattan area could go to the Met, present a valid student ID, and be whisked inside for a night of mingling and pretension as you’d expect from a night honoring the father of pop culture and all the works he’s influenced.

A Day In The Life Of Dylan Sprouse

Photos by Rachel Kaplan

At NYU Local we have the opportunity to interview a wide array of interesting people, but we rarely ever follow them through a typical day in their lives. This past Friday, photographer Rachel Kaplan and I met up with Disney Channel star Dylan Sprouse (The Suite Life of Zack and Cody).

If you’re not familiar with him, just stay in your room today and watch Big Daddy. That little blonde boy grew up to be the Gallatin student known as Dylan Thomas Sprouse. Dylan does have a twin brother named Cole Sprouse, but it made us respect him when he acknowledged that, even though he enjoys the time that he spends with his brother, he enjoys being recognized as an individual.

As of right now, Dylan is in Gallatin and plans to concentrate in video game design with a double major in poetry and studio art.  Read more…

[PHOTOS] Fun for the Whole Family in Hoboken, Pups Included

The annual Hoboken Music & Arts Festival took place yesterday on Washington Street between Observer Highway and 7th Street. The festival was a classier and more artistic version of the weekly street fairs that pop up all over Manhattan on weekends. It was a very family friendly event with moon bounces, children’s interactive performances, and arts & crafts tables – as well as extremely pet-friendly “doggy water” bowls with vendors who sold leashes and animal treats. There were dogs in strollers, babies in strollers, and everywhere you turned someone was wearing a football jersey representing his or her team. Photos by Rachel Kaplan.

[PHOTOS] A Lively Anniversary for Occupy Wall Street

Today marks the one year anniversary of Occupy Wall Street, the political movement that swept Lower Manhattan last September and was disbanded in December. Although there were plans of a resurgence in the spring of 2012, the movement had seemed to fizzle. Yesterday, the 99% converged in Foley Square to begin ‘Year II’ of the movement. Our photographer Rachel Kaplan joined protestors and captured the nostalgic mood of the occasion. We’ll have an update on the events occurring in Lower Manhattan later, but for now, here’s a liveblog documenting the day’s proceedings. More images from yesterday after the jump.

[PHOTOS] 86th Annual Feast of San Gennaro

Yesterday kicked off the 86th Annual Feast of San Gennaro, a week-and-a-half-long celebration honoring the Patron Saint of Naples held from September 13th through the 23rd. Complete with a cannoli eating contest, dozens of free live performances (held at the intersection of Grand Street and Mott Street, or “the heart of Little Italy”), and countless carnival games to play, San Gennaro is an eclectic and culturally enriching way to spend an afternoon. Although delicious and engaging, the festival is a big tourist attraction, and has proven to be a nuisance to surrounding residents. Our photographer Rachel Kaplan dove headfirst into the festival and returned with a sampling of pictures from the thrills of the first day. More images after the jump.

[PHOTOS] May Day Protests Swallow Lower Manhattan

May Day took over New York yesterday in a big way. From 8:30 am until late into the night, people took to the streets en masse. Bobst was picketed, Union Square was flooded, Tom Morello, Das Racist and Dan Deacon played a show, and huge march downtown ended in a massive general assembly held at Water Street. View images from the day after the jump, via our very own Rachel Kaplan.  Read more…

[PHOTOS] Justin Bieber Accepts Award At Stern: “Shoutout To NYU”

Article by Olivia Loving, Photos by Rachel Kaplan

By the end of the Tribeca Disruptive Innovation Awards, the crowd was getting anxious.

A few minutes before, it had seen Edward Burns (Saving Private Ryan) receive a Disruptive Innovation Award for his low-budget film, Newlyweds (2011).

And now it was waiting for Justin Bieber.

The star was appearing on the heels of many other talented awardees, like 12-year-old inventor Thomas Suarez, who received an award for his work with MakerBot, a company that develops robots. In a different presentation, a “hummingbird” took flight in the auditorium and crashed into the wall behind Edward Burns. A CheetahBot was unveiled at the front of the room.
