Wait – James Franco Goes Here!?!
NYULocal has had an interesting relationship with Mr. James Franco. We’ve seen him in Bobst and made it onto Gawker because of it, we’ve been upset when he’s acted like he doesn’t actually go here, and we freaked out when he started attending our great institution.
And he, more than likely, doesn’t know we exist. Which is fine! With a couple films, a book, a commencement speech, and two grad programs, Mr. Franco needs to focus on being awesome, which he has been (except for that whole snubbing us on SNL thing, but forigve and forget).
Anyway – we were wonderfully surprised to see NYMag featuring a quick description of Franco’s work here at at Tisch and even more surprised that they mentioned our school by name. Incredible! We just hope this doesn’t make those Columbia kids alienate him…

NYU Student Senate Responds to Torture Video
The New York University Student Senators Council had this to say in a statement concerning the torture video in which Sheikh Issa of the U.A.E. is seen torturing a grain merchant:
The Student Senators Council strongly condemns the acts depicted on an ABC News video implicating Sheikh Issa bin Zayed al Nahyan, brother of the Abu Dhabi’s crown prince, Sheikh Mohammed, and agents of the government of the U.A.E. in acts of torture. Moreover, the SSC calls upon the University touse all tools at its disposal to seek justice and to uphold its strong commitment to human rights. Continue…

BREAKING: Nothing Happens in Front of Kimmel
Despite his best attempts, Reverend Billy Talen was unable to put together any kind of large group this evening supporting his goal of exorcising the Kimmel Student Center in a blaze of religious glory.
The event, led by Talen’s mayoral campaign, was also said to be cosponsored by TBNYU! in some strange offshoot of the Kimmel Occupation, but little activity took place, at least not enough to warrant much attention. About twenty individuals walked along with the Reverend as he spoke of corruption in our educational system, and forty or so students marveled at his shiny blue suit and even shinier golden hair.
What did occur was an awkward exchange of students, policemen, and administrators as people kept asking themselves what in the world was going on. Chalk this one up to another in this week’s national series of protests with more press/gawkers than actual protesters. Continue…

Sexton Townhall Liveblog
Hey all – I’m in Hemmerdinger Hall, with tonsillitis torturing me, waiting to hear from our President, Dr John Sexton. He’s wearing a baby blue Brooklyn Prep sweatshirt, and he seems pretty relaxed. With TBNYU! being somewhat limited in its scope now, it’s no surprise Sexton is ready for, what I hope will be, a helpful and informative meeting of the minds. Leave a question in the comment section if you’d like me to ask it.
Here we go – Whitney Petrie, Vice-Chair of the Student Senate, is leading the discussion.
8:34pm – How will NYU be affected by Albany’s decsions on funding and Obama’s stimulus plan? He’s now explaining how the NYU team of administrators has been working to help garner aid and promote higher education in both Albany and DC. He hopes that higher education will remain a public good, as it once was in NYState during his youth.
8:39pm – NYHELPS is a program he is highlighting for its effectiveness. Creates loans for students with low and attractive interest rates, about 8% or so. Continue…

Breaking: Thousands of NYU Males Occupy Closets
It has come to the attention of NYU Local that thousands of male students at NYU have taken the next radical step to prove that they’re not “fags like all those other NYU gay dudes.” They have each come to occupy their dorm closets in a symbolic gesture to prove they “like to get all up in dat girl’s junk.”
“Dude, I totally like vagina. Like, it’s so awesome,” explained CAS junior and NYU basketball player Sean Hernandez through the grates of his Lafayette dorm closet.
When asked about their demands, the males each explained that they want girls throughout the tri-state area to know that, just because they’re wearing purple hoodies and have an awkwardly erotic bobcat crouching along their t-shirt, they “totally wanna get wit’ ya.”
Bob Batler, Executive Director of the Office of Student Activities, stated NYU’s policy on the occupation of any NYU facility, especially the closets within the schools’ residence halls.
“We will not tolerate nor allow for these young men to remain in the closet any longer. They are NYU students, and male NYU students at that. For them to remain within their closets, to even pretend that, being denizens of this University, that they could even possibly not be hiding there as a survival mechanism, is irresponsible and must come to an end.”
The students are also demanding scholarships for straight, male students from Texas A&M, and that these men be allowed to transfer to the school and create a football team because, as the students explained, “all our other teams are super gay.”
University Spokesman John Beckman was unavailable for comment.

Professor Nouriel Roubini’s Voluptuous Wall Decorations
If you’re not a frequent reader of the amazing blogs over at New York Magazine’s website, Daily Intel and Vulture, you really need to become one. The writers are hysterical (they recently suggested Secretary Clinton’s recent trip to Mexico was really just a cover up for a spring break trip), and they are always willing to help NYULocal out. So yeah, we love them.
But yesterday, we got a chance to see how truly incredible these folks are as they discovered Julia Allison, an internet sensation blogger, had posted photographs on her site proving that famed NYU Stern Professor Nouriel Roubini has strange fixtures adorning his apartment’s walls. Continue…

Twitter + College Rejection = Screaming Into the Void

The old joke is that NYU’s student body consists of Brown, Georgetown, and UPenn rejects. That kind of rejection, most often felt by any student not in Stern or Tisch, is what binded alot of us together upon our initial arrival at Washington Square.
Now, however, I can’t think of one thing those schools offers that NYU doesn’t provide in spades. Internship opportunities? Fo shizzle. Amazing speakers? Damn straight. Exciting events? Hell yes. World-famous staff? Obviously.
Well, rejection is still present in our society, and the good people over at The Daily Beast (guys, please fire Meghan McCain, for your own sake) has a host of college rejection tweets that have shown up across Twitter’s universe. They are sad, solemn, and often resolved. A few of our favorites after the jump. Continue…

Remember When That Slightly-Racist, Harvard-Educated, Palin-Loving Sensationalist Came To NYU?
Charles Murray, one of two writers of The Bell Curve, that infamous 1994 tome that described the ladder of intelligence as starting with Asians at the top, down to whites, and down to African Americans and Hispanics, will be on campus this Thursday at 11:00am in Kimmel Room 802 to speak on the topic of college-enrollment.
Murray’s newest book, Real Education, explains that only 20% of college students are able to grasp the information administered in their classes. The other 80%, he suggests, should become involved in manual labor.
Author Karin Chenoweth suggests that Murray wishes “to teach those children [who are members of the 80%] to fix cars rather than to ask them read novels, which are really more appropriate for—I’m going to take a leap, here—Murray’s children and grandchildren.”
I’ll be liveblogging the discussion and will keep you all updated on what intellectual racism/elitism sounds like. Did I mention he loves Sarah Palin?
