Slideshow: Another Reason to Hate Gramercy Green Residents
Here’s another reason for you to hate students living in Gramercy Green: the subcellar. In addition to the big ass windows, brand new kitchens, computer lab, and talking elevators, the students at the GG now have a gym, locker rooms, two TV lounges, a game room, more study rooms, bike racks, and tons of comfy couches. What’s next? A swimming pool?
I’m joining the rest of the Gramercy residents in basking in the luxurious glory of our brand new dorm as much as we can. Next year we’ll be living like everyone else: shitty everything. More pictures after the jump.

Avoid the Folly of Buying Books From NYU – There Are Better Options
If there’s one thing a college student should learn by their sophomore year, it is to avoid the bookstore when buying books for the new semester. As freshmen, we didn’t know any better. Avoid the ridiculous prices and long lines and buy somewhere else.
There are many places online where a student could buy books. There’s Half.com, Textbooks.com, and CampusBooks.com, just to name a few. However, the best website to use would be BigWords.com. It uses a sweet program that compares prices from a bunch of different websites and creates the best and cheapest combination of which books to buy from where. Why waste hours comparing different websites when a simple mouse-click can do the job in a few seconds?
And if you’re one of the many students who buy textbooks and never open them, rent them instead. If you feel like you might possibly be doing the readings this semester, Chegg.com offers cheap textbook rentals that are 65-85% off the original price. They’ll mail you your book(s) and when you’re done with them, you mail them back free of charge. And for those who are environmentally conscious, Chegg.com plants a tree for every book that is rented. Not only are you saving money, but you’re saving the environment as well. And in this shit storm of an economy that we’re in, we need to save every penny we can.

FBA Fashion Show Not Half Bad
My knowledge of the fashion industry is limited at best, with most of it coming from summer reruns of America’s Next Top Model. For a long time, whenever someone mentioned Oscar de la Renta, I thought of the champion boxer. So, covering a fashion show probably wasn’t the best idea for my fashion-challenged self. But I did…And my life wasn’t changed, but I did come away with a greater appreciation for the industry.
The Fashion Business Association at NYU held their fall fashion show yesterday night, showcasing several talented designers, a few of them from NYU. Continue…

Stern’s Dean Cooley Resigns, Returns to Classroom
In case you haven’t already heard, Thomas Cooley, in a letter sent out to the Stern community on Wednesday, announced that he was stepping down as Dean of the Stern School of Business.
His reason for leaving isn’t as scandalous as some might have suspected. With the timing of the announcement, some had suspicions that perhaps something “odd” had happened, and perhaps he was “pressured” into leaving by the NYU higher ups. Not the case. Continue…

Debate Points to End of Coke Ban
Yes, I know that I can just walk a measly five minutes to Space Market and grab a Coke, but let me be bitter (and a lazy ass) for a moment. I’m a diehard Coke person. I refuse to drink Pepsi. Why drink anything of lesser quality when I can buy Coke for an equal price, and it’s infinitely better? (Not to mention the excellent commercials.) So I attended last night’s debate about the continuation of NYU’s three year long Coke ban, hosted by the Political Union and Review @ NYU, not expecting any of my opinions to be changed. I thought the ban was stupid and pointless, and frankly, should never have been implemented in the first place. Continue…

Mixed Sex Housing May End This Year
For those of you who dream of living with a member of the opposite sex in an NYU dorm next year…well, your wishes may not come true. With the closing of Water Street at the school year’s end, NYU’s only option for mixed-sex housing will disappear along with the inconveniently located dorm. Continue…

Actually, NYU Homecoming is a Joke
This week’s Homecoming festivities are the latest misguided attempt to traditionalize our untraditional school. There’s a basketball game, carnival, a dance, and by the end of this week, we’ll have a new Homecoming King and Queen! The celebration started on Monday and the good stuff happens this weekend, but it’s already Thursday and I still don’t understand exactly what we’re celebrating.
Is anybody else laughing about this? Continue…

JSex Makes Bank, Here’s What NYU Thinks About It
So, interesting tidbit for all you NYU students: our beloved JSex makes the big bucks. The really big bucks. Bet you didn’t know that, huh? Neither did I, until I saw an article in WSN yesterday. Citing their own analysis of NYU’s tax returns, the WSN reported that JSex is receiving an annual compensation of over $1.3 million, a 56% increase from what he was receiving in 2006 (which was $800k).
My initial reaction upon hearing this was to laugh. Others had different reactions. Here are some responses from your NYU peers:
“I can’t say anything about that. It makes me depressed.” – Lucie Graham, Gallatin ‘11
“Yes, I would say that $1.3 million is a lot, but I think we need to be careful and realize that a Board of Trustees of a university (not a Fortune 500 company) usually doesn’t make pay increases like that without good reason. After this financial crisis, a lot of paychecks from Wall Street came out in the open and we saw how much these people were making in a week. Is it that ridiculous to think that a president who runs a humongous private university of over 40,000 people and numerous researchers gets paid, in a year, what some I-bankers make in a month? Also, I think a lot of us assume that the money is coming right out of students’ pockets and I don’t think that’s necessarily true.” – Vera Chau, CAS ‘10 Continue…

“Buried Secrets of the Bible” Actually Interesting
Forget 90210 or reruns of CSI. Tuesday night, I’ll be edumacating myself about the B-I-B-L-E (Yes, that’s the book for me!) and expanding my horizons beyond the silly drivel of Sunday school sermons. Whether or not you believe in the man (or woman) upstairs, it’d be worth your time to take a look at NOVA’s newest documentary: “The Bible’s Buried Secrets.” Sounds exciting, no?
Okay, so probably not. If anything, it’s like a spruced up version of your ConWest lecture with low-budget CGI animation and a Liev Schreiber voiceover. But still, even with the campy special effects, the subject matter is certainly interesting. Like, how did the Israelites come up with the idea of one god? Or, did God have a wife?
Twenty-five minutes worth of clips from the documentary were shown to an audience last Thursday at a panel discussion hosted by NOVA and the Interfaith Center of New York. The discussion was a lot more interesting than clips of out-of-breath, elderly archaeologists. Continue…
