Franco was said to have set off a mild frenzy when he showed up at the department floor. (Surprising, seeing as NYU students usually try to play it cool with, “Haley Joel Osmont? He’s actually a really sweet guy… I smoked with him once.”) His name is on the roster as James Edward Franco, though we’re told he already missed his first class. Franco – get it together.

A sampling of the academic syllabus:

Week 1: “You Don’t Know Dick: The Courageous Hearts of Transsexual Men” (1997 documentary)

Week 2: “Mom’s Apple Pie: The Heart of the Lesbian Mothers’ Custody Movement” (2006 documentary)

Week 3: “Loads” (12 minute film from 1971)

Week 7: “Bottom Values: Anal Economics in History of Black Neighborhoods” and “When are Dirty Details and Scenes Compelling? Tucked in the Cuts of Interracial Anal Rape,” both readings pulled from Kathryn Stockton’s book, “Beautiful Bottoms, Beautiful Shame.

The actor has shown previous interest in queer cinema, directing his own film in Tisch last school year based on gay poetry. We wish him the best here and please put your Blackberry cameras down.

Sad news from Dean Mary Schmidt Campbell:

With great sorrow, I wish to inform you of the death of John Lamensdorf, Class of 2009. John died Thursday night in a tragic accident while working on a student film project in Georgia. The accident is currently under investigation by local authorities. Another Tisch student is receiving treatment for injuries sustained in the accident. The School has dispatched a team of faculty and staff members to Georgia to help the other students involved in the project to return home.

John Lamensdorf received his BFA in film and television earlier this month, after submitting a superb advanced narrative film. He was widely known among members of our community for his searching intelligence, artistic integrity, and deep capacity for friendship. Our hearts go out in sympathy to John’s family and friends. When information about a funeral or a memorial service becomes available, I will share it with you.

In them meantime, I want to remind everyone that if you are feeling vulnerable, or would simply like to talk about your feelings, you may call the University’s Wellness Exchange at 212-443-9999 on a round-the-clock basis

Anyone with more information about the investigation contact: tips@nyulocal.com

Update:

Authorities said the NYU crew ran electrical wiring around a house to light a night shoot with a power generator Thursday night, when a mechanical arm lift on a truck parked across the road struck overhead electrical lines. Jasper County sheriff’s Lt. Jerry Robinson said Saturday that sent a charge through the wires the crew was working with, shocking one student who was airlifted to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta.

The following is a first hand account originally published as a Facebook note by Elizabeth Zahler, as a letter to TBNYU!.

Dear TBNYU,

I thought we had had this discussion. I thought you understood that your tactics were immature and ineffective, and that you had already garnered enough of the hatred of the entire student body to convince you to lay off for good.

It appears we have to have the talk again.

You know why your original protest was dumb? Because it provoked the anger of the people it was meant to inspire, because it was factually incorrect on pretty much every point, and worst of all, because it showed absolutely no knowledge of history. And yet, here you are, making the exact same mistakes again.

Do you know what you get by handing out fliers to passing tour groups, encouraging them to ask their tour guides about NYU’s ‘overseas corruption’, ‘union busting’, ‘massively inflating tuition’, and ’student discontent’? You don’t convince anything of the tour groups, because they ask their student guides if it’s true and the guides just explain how everyone on campus hates you. What you DO accomplish is to alienate yet more of the smartest and most engaged students on campus How did you think you were going to effectuate any kind of change without the best and the brightest of NYU on your side? Poor choice.

But it also demonstrates that you’re only interested in controversy, not being a part of the solution. If you really wanted to make NYU more affordable, more amenable to GSOC’s claims, or more willing to listen to what you have to say about Abu Dhabi, you’d try to engage the students and administration in constructive dialogue. Handing out an anonymous flier and leaving us to clean up the damage is neither constructive, nor dialogue.

Lastly, it once again shows how out of touch you are with both current reality and history. Your facts are just wrong – no, 70% of classes aren’t taught by TAs, no, the campus hasn’t been ‘wracked by protests’ – but so is your perspective. You seem to think that you’re part of some proud tradition. But your actions in the past and now show how disconnected you are from the true spirit of protest and liberalism. When security guards walked into the cafeteria you thought you were occupying, you shouted ‘police brutality!’ – despite the fact that none of you were injured, and two NYU security guards were sent to the hospital. How unbelievably arrogant and disrespectful to the memories of those who HAVE died at the hands of police brutality, to imagine that you could possibly have any understanding of the depth of their suffering.

And now – to imagine that you’re representing the ‘real’ NYU, or ‘unions’ in some vague sense, or any sort of ‘grassroots movement’?

My father marched with Martin Luther King. My mother had to be escorted to work by armed guards to protect her from violent anti-abortionists.

You are an embarrassment to liberalism.

Sit down, shut up, and go back to class.
